AI companies entered the year determined to make 2025 “the year of the agent” — but ran headlong into institutions that aren’t having any of it. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">On Tuesday, Amazon sent Perplexity a cease-and-desist letter telling the company to stop enabling its browser, Comet, from browsing and making purchases on <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/1f4f50db?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>Amazon.com</u></a>. The move came a year after Amazon previously told Perplexity to stop deploying agents to shop on its site; Perplexity complied for a time before releasing Comet in July.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Here are <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/12db0de5?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>Shirin Ghaffary and Matt Day at Bloomberg</u></a>:</p><blockquote style="margin: 0; padding: 0; border-left: #2047FF 2px solid; font-size: 17px; font-weight: 500; line-height: 1.6em; letter-spacing: -0.2px; color: #15212A;"><p style="line-height: 1.6em; margin: 2em 25px; font-size: 1em; padding: 0; color: #15212A;">The e-commerce giant is accusing Perplexity of committing computer fraud by failing to disclose when its AI agent is shopping on a user’s behalf, in violation of Amazon’s terms of service, according to people familiar with the letter sent on Friday. The document also said Perplexity’s tool degraded the Amazon shopping experience and introduced privacy vulnerabilities, said the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters.</p></blockquote><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Perplexity, which is now <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/05522b19?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>valued at $20 billion</u></a>, responded by accusing Amazon of “bullying.” “This is Amazon’s first legal salvo against an AI company, and it is a threat to all internet users,” Perplexity wrote in a post titled “<a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/705de627?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>Bullying is not innovation</u></a>.” “Today, Amazon announced it does not believe in your right to hire labor, to have an assistant or an employee acting on your behalf.  This isn’t a reasonable legal position, it’s a bully tactic to scare disruptive companies like Perplexity out of making life better for people.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">It is hardly surprising to see Perplexity flouting another company’s terms of service. Last year the company was caught <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/b6b79435?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>repeating unlicensed publisher content verbatim</u></a>, which it blamed on “rough edges” in a new product. Reddit has <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/09fffc3c?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>sued Perplexity</u></a> as part of alleged scheme in which three data-scraping companies scraped Reddit without permission; Reddit alleges that Perplexity bought data from one of the brokers. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">In August, Cloudflare reported that <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/4f1782d7?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>the company uses “stealth crawlers” to access websites</u></a> that attempt to block Perplexity’s agents. “Some supposedly 'reputable' AI companies act more like North Korean hackers," Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/f23bd2f2?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>wrote</u></a> in sharing the company’s investigation. "Time to name, shame, and hard block them."</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Perplexity <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/a5c47c62?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>responded</u></a> by saying Cloudflare had made errors in its methodology, and made a version of an argument it would repeat today in response to Amazon: its agents are simply tools deployed on behalf of human users, and should be treated by platforms as they would treat a human visitor. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">You will probably not be surprised to learn that, in a blog post, Amazon <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/c3d82b2f?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>rejected this argument</u></a>. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">“We think it’s fairly straightforward that third-party applications that offer to make purchases on behalf of customers from other businesses should operate openly and respect service provider decisions whether or not to participate,” the company said. “This helps ensure a positive customer experience and it is how others operate, including food delivery apps and the restaurants they take orders for, delivery service apps and the stores they shop from, and online travel agencies and the airlines they book tickets with for customers.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Amazon added that Comet offers a “significantly degraded shopping and customer service experience,” which is probably as close as one AI company has come to telling another that their product sucks.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">I understand that the stakes here might feel small. What does it matter whether a person or a bot clicks the buttons on an e-commerce website resulting in a package being delivered to your house? </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">In fact, though, some meaningful percentage of the future of the web hinges on how this question is resolved. The foundations of the internet we have today were built on the idea that it is humans who are visiting websites and conducting transactions. If that idea breaks, many other things will break along with it.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">If you’re a person, you may well want to use Perplexity in the ways that has infuriated so many other companies. You may be happy to use its browser as an extension of yourself, and have it go read articles and buy paper towels while you do something else. Perhaps you see it as a tool, not unlike browser extensions that automatically fill out forms or enter your password. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">If you’re Perplexity, you want to encourage this kind of thinking. The more you can get people to use your agents, the bigger opportunity you will have to build an advertising and affiliate business, while also selling Perplexity subscriptions. Google became a juggernaut by becoming the entry point to the larger web; Perplexity (and its many rivals, including Google itself) now seek to do the same thing for the AI era. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">If you’re a business caught in AI companies’ sights, all of this likely seems much less appealing to you. Getting humans to visit your website, after all, is a foundational pillar of your business. Once a human is visiting your site, they might see an ad, sign up for a newsletter, or make a purchase. They might make more purchases than they originally intended, thanks to the clever ways in which you enticed them after they arrived. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">And, if you’re <em>Amazon</em>, getting a human visitor to use your site means you can direct them to your own AI tools and agents. Rufus is <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/0c01680b?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>Amazon’s shopping chatbot</u></a>; “<a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/e24cc904?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>Buy for Me</u></a>” lets you shop on other brands’ websites while you’re still on Amazon. (Brands have to opt in to this experience, unlike Perplexity’s more audacious approach.)</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">For now, none of this seems particularly urgent. Today’s AI agents are slow, unreliable shoppers, and it is almost always easier to buy things yourself online than to entrust the task to a browser like Comet. But that’s changing at moderate speed — Google <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/9148efdc?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>introduced a new model</u></a> last month that developers can use to build agents that navigate user interfaces.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">And so before long, <em>lots</em> of websites are going to be asking the same questions Amazon had to ask with Perplexity. Do we fight these guys in court? Do we strike up a partnership? Or do we allow some types of agents in the belief that we’ll ultimately make more money that way?</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">The (still-unlikely) scenario that worries me is that one AI company succeeds at a grander scale than all the rest, replacing much of a web with a single LLM. (I am not worried that this company will be Perplexity, which is buffoonish and antisocial and conducts its business as if it were a jewel heist.) It is not in our collective interest for one company to have all that power.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">That’s why I remain a fan of Cloudflare’s proposed <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/b08726e7?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>pay-per-crawl</u></a> model, which charges AI agents for accessing publishers’ sites, preserving something like the original exchange of value that created the web. And I can imagine a version of it working for e-commerce sites as well. Perhaps sites like Amazon decide that humans can shop on their site for free, but agents have to pay something upfront to compensate for the lost revenue they might expect from a human visitor. Other sites might decide to allow agents at no cost, sparking fresh competition and perhaps even lower prices for consumers. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Most importantly, it incentivizes the further development of a decentralized web — and preserves some semblance of a balance of power, if only between oligarchs. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Amazon will be fine regardless of how this particular conflict plays out. But I’m curious how much longer Perplexity will be able to keep up its act. The company loves to present itself as an underdog. It depends who you ask.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">The <em>Wall Street Journal</em> <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/a5780044?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>talked to</u></a> locals in Umatilla and Hermiston, Oregon about how massive <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Amazon</strong> AI data center buildouts are affecting the rural communities. The takeaway: AI data center projects are creating economic booms, bringing new people into the middle class, and bringing funding to municipalities and schools’ science education programs.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">At the same time, housing and childcare costs are growing beyond the reach of many residents of the towns, and new municipal funding has caused infighting between administrators. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">And with an influx of new workers, people are finding the towns’ ways of life changing: “We were a town where everybody knew everybody,” <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Dennis Barnett</strong>, a Hermiston accountant and benefactor of its rodeo, told the <em>WSJ</em>. “Now, I know nobody.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Meanwhile in the <em>New Yorker</em>, reporter <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Stephen Witt</strong> does a <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/63e144a3?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>deep dive</u></a> on the growing AI data center buildout that includes an illuminating conversation with an anonymous farmer living near a secret-location <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Microsoft</strong> data center. (Witt was allowed to tour the center on the condition that he not reveal where in the United States it is.) Real estate purchases had brought money to the region, including the farmer's family. But he was planning on moving out soon, in part due to rising electricity costs.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Concerns over water use, though, were overrated, the farmer said. “Honestly, we probably use more water than they do.” </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Witt also pointed out that data centers have increased pollution in some areas, with nitrogen oxide levels spiking after the building of a natural-gas-powered <strong style="font-weight: 700;">xAI</strong> data center in Memphis.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Witt asked the anonymous farmer whether he used AI. “I use Claude,” he said. “Google sucks now.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">Why we’re following:</strong> Both pieces add good nuance to the discourse about AI data centers, their impact on surrounding communities, and how they affect the environment. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Taken together, the pieces illustrate how some development projects are having a positive impact on many people’s lives in rural communities. And some environmental concerns, like water use, seem overblown. Barak apologized, saying he “didn't mean to send at you the matmul [matrix multiplication] mafia with pitchforks,” in an <strong style="font-weight: 700;">X</strong> <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/31be4f0e?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>reply</u></a> near the end.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Thankfully, the two managed to make up this afternoon on <strong style="font-weight: 700;">X</strong>.
