<p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Today, on the occasion of its <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/53059a6c?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">surpassing</a> 40 million registered users, let’s check in on Bluesky.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">It has been almost exactly a year since Bluesky's biggest growth spurt. In the wake of Donald Trump's re-election as president, and Elon Musk's continued degradation of X, Bluesky welcomed <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/21c30578?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">an exodus</a> of liberals, leftists, journalists, and academic researchers, among other groups. It hit No. 1 in the App Store and enjoyed a round of mainstream press coverage. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">As is typical of social networks, though, that spike in new users soon flattened out. The number of people who liked at least one post peaked at 2.7 million on November 18 last year and has since declined. (About 1.1 million people liked a post today, according to <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/a7f11354?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">stats from the Bluesky API</a>.)</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">That Bluesky managed to double its number of registered users over the past year despite a decline in daily usage speaks to the ongoing demand for a platform that can replicate and improve upon the experience of pre-Musk Twitter. At the same time, complaints about Bluesky abound, both from those who use it daily and those who have tried it and found it wanting.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Much of the conversation centers on the left-leaning user base and the hostility with which users punish non-consensus views. In August, Matt Yglesias <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/f803e18a?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">wrote that</a> "the dominant discursive strategy that’s used in these left-wing spaces [...] is to essentially punish people for heterodoxy by greatly exaggerating the extent of disagreement."</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Nate Silver opened the latest front in the Bluesky debate in September with <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/f93a8ee8?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">a post about "Blueskyism,"</a> which he defines as "not a political movement so much as a tribal affiliation, a niche set of attitudes and style of discursive norms that almost seem designed in a lab to be as unappealing as possible to anyone outside the clique." Its hallmarks, he writes, are aggressively punishing dissent, credentialism, and a dedication to the proposition that we are all currently living through the end of the world. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Noah Smith echoed Silver's central critique <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/c7bdc770?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">a few days later</a>. And certainly, aspects of these critiques resonate with me. I mostly avoid participating in online culture-warring in favor of niche tech policy debates. But several times I have inelegantly worded a Bluesky post and found my replies turned into a wasteland. In particular I am loath to discuss artificial intelligence there, basically at all: the vitriol is so intense that even as someone who spends a lot of time writing variations of "this seems bad and we should stop doing it" my AI writing is perceived by many or even most of the people in my Bluesky replies as overawed hype.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Boo-hoo, I know. People who make their opinions having opinions online are always going to have a worse experience on social than the average person, everyone involved in these debates over Bluesky can easily take it. (“'They’re dragging your ass on Bluesky' is a statement that strikes fear into the heart of practically no one," Smith boasted.)</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Recently, though, Bluesky has acknowledged that it is not only centrist political commentators who are having a bad time on the site. And its efforts to rectify the problem speak, I think, to some of the central contradictions in its mission.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">II.</strong></p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">On September 19, a few days after the Silver discourse died down, Bluesky shared some of its initial plans to address the negativity that so many commentators have criticized. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">The company began by noting some of the novel features it has implemented to improve the user experience. For example, you can change your settings so that only followers can reply to your post — a move that dramatically reduced the amount of drive-by opprobrium I received on the site. You can also remove hostile quote-posts, making it harder to dunk, and implement block lists created by others.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Even so, the company wrote: "Although we focused on building these solutions to empower users, we still inherited many of the problems of traditional social platforms. We’ve seen how harassment, vitriol, and bad-faith behavior can degrade overall conversation quality."</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">The company continues to have novel ideas to address the problem. It is workshopping a "zen mode" that "sets new defaults for how you experience the network and interact with people." (I assume by heavily restricting replies.) Bluesky is also considering giving users prompts before they post, which may inspire them to do something other than mock another user. And last month it updated its <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/33733c23?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">community guidelines</a>; among other things, Bluesky has a new principle encouraging users to "respect others." </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">And on Friday, the company announced <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/8f450424?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">a further set of updates</a>. Most significantly, the company plans to let users privately "dislike" a post that they see in the ranked Discover feed. "Dislikes help the system understand what kinds of posts you’d prefer to see less of," the company said. "They may also lightly inform reply ranking, reducing the visibility of low-quality replies."</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">The company also said it is using an updated automated content moderation system; the model "aims to do a better job of detecting replies that are toxic, spammy, off-topic, or posted in bad faith," the company said. (There go all the replies to my post! Kidding! Sort of!)</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Bluesky CTO Paul Frazee posted some fairly anodyne thoughts on these updates last week and (somewhat comically) found himself attacked by users, some of whom said the company is being "too paternalistic." ("One of my replies got picked up for some pretty heavy quote dunking, which I figured out Saturday morning because I saw somebody indirectly memeing about it," Frazee wrote today <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/16094268?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">on his blog</a>. "You know you're in trouble when something you said has become a copypasta.")</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Frazee noted a fundamental tension in Bluesky's product. On one hand, it wants Bluesky to be a nicer place to hang out than its peers. ("X is now famous for being toxic, and we feel like that's bad for people, and I would say we're not alone: people repeatedly tell us they want to enjoy themselves online without being harassed, demeaned, or threatened," Frazee wrote.)</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">On the other hand, Bluesky prioritizes user freedom. Fine-grained reply settings, 100,000-plus user-created ranking algorithms to choose from, and other community-created moderation tools give Bluesky users much more flexibility than you find on, say, Threads. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">The result of these competing impulses is that the average person has to put significant work into creating the experience they want. And even after they change all those settings, they may not find that Bluesky feels any nicer than X does at its worst. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">When I asked my own Bluesky followers for a temperature check today, I received the full gamut of responses. Some find it a charming, <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/060b67bd?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">civil</a>, productive place for conversation. Others find it tense and anxiety-producing. "Sometimes it seems like it's just a chorus of voices telling me that things I already think are bad are in fact even worse than I thought," user Kevin Buist <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/f7e470d2?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">told me</a>.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Bluesky wins increasing praise for <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/795a95f0?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">its moderation tools</a>, as <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/d3832666?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">a place to discuss sports</a>, and for the underlying AT Protocol, which powers a growing number of <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/82b8c28e?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">niche apps</a>.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">It also reliably exhausts people. Bluesky is "the best place to get accurate information about what is happening while being yelled at by people who don't know what a joke is," <em>Splinter</em> editor in chief Jacob Weindling told me.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">The open question, I think, is how much of this state of affairs is unique to Bluesky — and how much of it is simply the way that microblogging services are destined to develop. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">In September, Max Read noted that Silver's critique of Bluesky applies equally well to X. <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/f694e103?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">He writes</a>:</p><blockquote style="margin: 0; padding: 0; border-left: #2047FF 2px solid; font-size: 17px; font-weight: 500; line-height: 1.6em; letter-spacing: -0.2px; color: #15212A;"><p style="line-height: 1.6em; margin: 2em 25px; font-size: 1em; padding: 0; color: #15212A;">Based on my own observations it’s abundant with aggressive dissent-policing, appeals to authority, and catastrophism, regardless of clique, tribe, party, or affiliation. The right(s) and the center(s) that still populate Twitter have their own moral micropanics and main characters (whenever a left-wing college professor tweets something radical, or when Taylor Lorenz tweets literally anything at all), their own legitimating credentials (being a venture capitalist or a longtime LessWrong poster or a Navy SEAL), their own catastrophisms (see Elon Musk’s feed sometime).</p></blockquote><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Bluesky's political bent may be different than X's these days, but the basic dynamics of online text-based combat are the same. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">It's clear that you can build a nicer online environment than X has; in many ways Bluesky already did. What's less clear is that you can build a Twitter clone that mostly makes people feel good. For as vital and hilarious as Twitter often was, it also accelerated the polarization of our politics and often left users feeling worse than they did before they opened it. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Bluesky's ingenuity in reimagining feeds and moderation tools has been a boon to social networks, which have happily adopted some of its best ideas. (You can now find "starter packs" on both Threads and Mastodon.) Ultimately, though, it has the same shape and fundamental dynamics as a place that even its most active users called "the Hellsite." </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Bluesky began by rethinking many core assumptions about social networks. To realize its dream of a feel-good feed, though, it will likely need to rethink several more. </p><div class="kg-card kg-image-card" style="margin: 0 0 1.5em; padding: 0;"><img src="https://www.platformer.news/content/images/2024/05/floating_linebreak_600px-1.png" class="kg-image" alt loading="lazy" width="600" height="157" style="border: none; -ms-interpolation-mode: bicubic; max-width: 100%; display: block; margin: 0 auto; height: auto; width: auto;"></div><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">Talk about this edition with us in Discord: </strong><a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/c572fbba?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">This link will get you in for the next week</a>.</p><h2 id="following" style="margin-top: 0; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 1.11em; font-weight: 700; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility; margin: 1.5em 0 0.5em 0; font-size: 32px; color: #15212A;">Following</h2><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"></p><h3 id="the-neo-home-robot-goes-viral" style="margin-top: 0; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 1.11em; font-weight: 700; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility; margin: 1.5em 0 0.5em 0; font-size: 26px; color: #15212A;">The NEO Home Robot goes viral</h3><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">What happened: </strong>Robotics startup <strong style="font-weight: 700;">1X</strong> announced its first product, the <strong style="font-weight: 700;">NEO Home Robot</strong>, which is designed to take care of mundane household chores in the manner of <em>The Jetsons</em>' Rosie. Still, venture capitalists <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/35137216?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">have put $5 billion into humanoid robots</a> since 2024, and Neo promises to be one of the first to actually ship. A <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/472c94f5?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>transcript</u></a> released by the court reveals that Sutskever sent a staggering <em>52-page memo</em> on Sam Altman’s behavior to OpenAI board members before he was fired.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">A lawyer for Musk read the following quote from the memo: “Sam exhibits a consistent pattern of lying, undermining his execs, and pitting his execs against one another.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">A lawyer for Musk asked what an appropriate response to the information in the memo would be. He was “very unhappy,” he said, because “I really did not want OpenAI to merge with Anthropic.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">Why we’re following: </strong>Like the 2016 election, Altman's 2023 firing is one of those mega-events that we fully expect to still be debating a year from now. We already knew from previous reports that Sutskever and Murati had played a big role in convincing the board to fire their boss. But the deposition adds much more color to the story.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">While Murati continues to distance herself from Altman's firing, it seems unlikely it would have happened had she not supplied Sutskever with so much ammunition. And while the board clearly mishandled the firing, their decision seems much more understandable when you understand that two of Altman's top lieutenants presented it with 52 pages of alleged misdeeds.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">In hindsight, it’s amazing that the dominant narrative coming out of Altman's firing was “these effective altruist doomers are out of control.” The real story was that the C-suite was revolting against their boss.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">What people are saying: </strong>Tech people of <strong style="font-weight: 700;">X </strong>have been fascinated by the deposition and Ilya’s memo: <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Deedy Das</strong>, a partner at VC firm Menlo Ventures, <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/74a115ba?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>called</u></a> it “the spiciest episode of this season of OpenAI.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Elon Musk (regrettably) had the sam reaction we did. “52 pages is a lot,” he <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/9d908080?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>observed</u></a>.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Meanwhile, hedge fund manager <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Benn Eifert</strong> went hard for<strong style="font-weight: 700;"> </strong>Altman’s character. “Sam Altman is a fascinating new type of person -- someone who is transparently a sociopathic liar and grifter and immensely unlikeable to 99% of humanity,” he said, “but within Silicon Valley tech bro circles is viewed as incredibly charismatic and visionary.” The <strong style="font-weight: 700;">X</strong> <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/4e10b47f?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>post</u></a> has more than 29,000 likes.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><em>—Ella Markianos</em></p><div class="kg-card kg-image-card" style="margin: 0 0 1.5em; padding: 0;"><img src="https://www.platformer.news/content/images/2024/05/floating_linebreak_600px-1.png" class="kg-image" alt loading="lazy" width="600" height="157" style="border: none; -ms-interpolation-mode: bicubic; max-width: 100%; display: block; margin: 0 auto; height: auto; width: auto;"></div><h3 id="side-quests" style="margin-top: 0; font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 1.11em; font-weight: 700; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility; margin: 1.5em 0 0.5em 0; font-size: 26px; color: #15212A;">Side Quests</h3><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">President <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Trump</strong> <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/014ed1c5?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>insisted</u></a> he doesn't know who <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Binance</strong> founder <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Changpeng Zhao</strong> is, and pardoned him because he “heard it was a <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Biden</strong> witch hunt.” </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">China</strong>’s leader <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Xi Jinping</strong> <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/5f27f541?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>pushed</u></a> for a global AI regulatory body at a meeting of APEC leaders.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">Delaware</strong> attorney general <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Kathy Jennings</strong> <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/4f621a0c?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>said</u></a> she will take legal action against <strong style="font-weight: 700;">OpenAI</strong> if it fails to stick to its public interest pledges.
