In today's column, </em><strong style="font-weight: 700;">Platformer</strong> <em>fellow Ella Markianos investigates and finds that the industry's views about them have rapidly shifted.</em></p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Last month, data-labeling company Scale AI released a new chatbot leaderboard, joining academic-project-turned-startup LMArena in a competition to build the AI industry’s premier benchmark. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Instead of scoring correct answers on automated tests the way most benchmarks do, these products aggregate votes from hundreds of thousands of users on responses to the same prompt from competing chatbots. The idea is to identify and promote models that are preferred by regular people in everyday use rather than to rely on more abstract, machine-generated evaluations.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">LMArena and Scale — which Meta <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/8ec5541c?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>purchased a 49 percent stake in this summer</u></a>, after a spring marked by <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/ea19011d?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>a scandal involving its Llama model and LMArena</u></a> — are investing in these leaderboards even as they appear to be losing their utility. The aftermath of ChatGPT’s release in 2022 led to an explosion of rival large language models, and for a time leaderboards offered an easy way to see at a glance which models were best. The benchmark was influential enough that in April, Meta did extensive testing — and, depending on who you ask, a bit of cheating — to get its Llama model to the top of the leaderboard.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">But over the past year, crowd-voted leaderboards have become a much less reliable way to judge the quality of chatbots. Most LLMs are already more than good enough for casual chat, the leaderboards have often been gamed, and top leaderboards now disagree on which model is best. Inside labs and among power users, benchmarking has shifted to task-specific evaluations and other niche testing — tools designed to predict real-world performance rather than put the question up to a vote.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">In interviews with <strong style="font-weight: 700;">Platformer</strong>, leaderboard executives insist that their products still serve a valuable role in evaluating AI. But it seems clear that over the last year they have been slipping in rank.</p><table class="kg-card kg-hr-card" role="presentation" width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="border-collapse: separate; mso-table-lspace: 0pt; mso-table-rspace: 0pt; width: 100%;"><tbody><tr><td style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; vertical-align: top; color: #15212A; margin: 0; padding-top: 1.5em; padding-bottom: 3em; font-size: 17px;" valign="top"><!--[if !mso]><!-- --><hr style="position: relative; width: 100%; margin: 3em 0; padding: 0; height: 1px; background-color: transparent; border: 0; border-top: 1px solid #e0e7eb; display: none;"><!--<![endif]--><table class="kg-hr" role="presentation" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="border-collapse: separate; mso-table-lspace: 0pt; mso-table-rspace: 0pt; width: 100%;" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; vertical-align: top; color: #15212A; padding-top: 1.5em; padding-bottom: 3em; margin: 0; padding: 0; border-top: 1px solid #e0e7eb; font-size: 0; line-height: 0;" valign="top"> </td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">The idea that most chatbots are already good enough for most users became salient with GPT-5’s release this August. In the early days of the model’s release, many users commenting online said they did not find OpenAI’s new model to be much better than previous ones.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">A flurry of articles and X posts speculated that AI progress must be hitting a wall, and that further investments in scaling up LLMs would be wasted.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">At the same time, an alternate hypothesis was circulating among LLM power users and tech literati: maybe the difference between models seemed small because GPT-4.5 and its cohort were already intelligent enough for most users. To the extent that GPT-5 is more intelligent, the difference mostly can’t be observed in brief chatbot interactions. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/d42875fa?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>Blogger Sean Goedecke</u></a> said that “there doesn’t seem to be a huge consumer pressure towards smarter models.” A commenter<a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/fb3f6743?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u> on Hacker News</u></a> agreed that even if power users can see distinctions between models for their niche coding and research needs, “ChatGPT is good enough for the use cases of most of its users.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">These power users’ hypotheses were borne out in the public discourse around GPT-5: many <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/4c5329b9?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>people demanded</u></a> the return of the older GPT-4o model, whose personality they had grown attached to and whose answers they found more than good enough. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">The love for GPT-4o endured despite clear signs that its successor is superior: it <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/0eaa3ecc?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>beat previous OpenAI models</u></a> on respected coding and general knowledge benchmarks, and <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/53438fbc?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>power users</u></a> tended to prefer it.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Looking at LMArena today, though, you would be forgiven for assuming that 4o’s most fervent fans are correct. <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/0246ce05?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>On LMArena’s text leaderboard</u></a>, GPT-5 currently rests below Anthropic’s Claude and Google’s Gemini — and still ranks a hair below two versions of GPT-4.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Meanwhile, users of the new Scale AI leaderboard came to a different conclusion. On a recent, <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/0342443b?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>similar ranking</u></a> based on over a million votes from real users, GPT-5 (barely) outperformed the competition. The fact that two leaderboards using similar methodologies came to different conclusions, though, suggests that there is no longer one clear winner.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">In an interview, Scale shared other evidence that no one model is best for all uses. For example, while power users typically turn to “thinking” models for most tasks, leaderboard voters tend to prefer less powerful, non-thinking alternatives.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Other leaderboards “tend to rank thinking models or higher computation models higher than the chat versions of those models,” said Janie Gu, the product manager for Scale’s SEAL Showdown, told me. But “our leaderboard actually ranks the chat versions higher.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Before Scale tries to adjust for confounding variables, the thinking and non-thinking models are actually about evenly matched in the company’s data. But the company found that users tend to rate models higher <em>simply because</em> they take longer, so it added a control for that effect that pushed thinking model rankings down.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Scale’s adjustment for loading times is part of a family of “style control” techniques pioneered by LMArena after Meta <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/fc036d83?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>gamed their leaderboard</u></a> with their Llama Maverick model in May, leading evaluators to seek new methods to prevent cheating. Meta had gotten Llama to the top of the board by giving longer responses and using an excessive number of emojis, which average users preferred to more terse models. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">But the answers themselves were not obviously better than other models’, leading LMArena to change their ranking methodology. The new method was an effort to “adjust for these things and construct a leaderboard that is a little bit closer to reflecting model performance,” LMArena’s CEO Anastasios Angelopoulos told me.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">But the Llama controversy reflected a more fundamental problem with this type of benchmark: sometimes people’s preferences can be… bad.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">So who is still paying close attention to leaderboards? Many of the benchmarking experts I’ve talked to have said they don’t rely on leaderboards — even their own — to decide what tool to use.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Gu, SEAL Showdown’s product manager, told me she mainly decides what to use “based on, like, broader vibes on Twitter and stuff,” as well as extensive testing for her own use cases.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Sayash Kapoor of Princeton’s Holistic Agent Leaderboard also relies on personal experimentation. “If I actually have something I want to use multiple times, I'll have, like, multiple tabs open with different prompts and different reasoning efforts from different providers.” Kapoor, who is also the co-author of <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/736540b6?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>AI As Normal Technology</u></a>, says his approach is “a pretty good way to figure out how I use models for my own individual purposes.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">He does find that specialized benchmarks can predict how well a model does, although with “of course, not perfect correlation.” In particular, HAL’s <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/6598f652?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>scientific coding tests</u></a> seemed to correlate well with how useful his lab found the models.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">In contrast, LMArena’s Angelopoulos says personal testing isn’t enough — and people should still turn to leaderboards to help decide what to use. With the sheer volume of chatbots and potential conversations available, “no person has actually the sample size necessary in order to understand which model is best for them.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">He’s bullish about <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/74302913?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>a tool</u></a> his company made that takes in a prompt and guesses which model would answer it best.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">That tool reflects a broader trend I’m seeing in talking to benchmarkers about the value in their products. Rather than their tools just telling you what the absolute “best” chat model is, they’re providing specialized information.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Gu said Scale is able to use their user preference data to find “fine-grained insights into how models perform, which is really valuable to model builders to know.” For example, different models perform better in different geographic areas — ChatGPT leads in Europe, according to Scale’s data, while Claude and ChatGPT tie for No. 1 across other continents. Gu said this data is valuable to “make sure that their models work for everyone.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">LMArena’s Angelopoulos said that his company tends to unearth novel insights, like “this model is really good at math” or “really bad at Japanese” — capabilities where developers will say they “had no idea” that was how their models performed in that context. “That level of granularity in terms of performance differences across models is really engaging to see.”</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Whatever relevance it may have lost for researchers, the LMArena leaderboard continues to grow. Last month, <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/6bac7be7?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>the company hit</u></a> 3 million monthly users after Google’s still-in-testing image model, Nano Banana, went viral on X. People like using the platform because it’s a free way to test new frontier models, and get additional use out of older models after hitting rate limits on ChatGPT and other services. LMArena also provides more specialized leaderboards for many applications including image generation and web development.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">For these reasons, leaderboards remain very much alive. But the saturation of the chat benchmark has important implications for AI companies.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">For one, it now seems clear that casual chatbot users will continue to think AI progress has stalled even as new models continue to improve for specialized use cases like coding and scientific research.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">For another, AI labs will have to develop new ways to show off their smarts. Expect companies to keep investing in the features they build <em>around</em> their models, such as memory features and integrations with other apps, to amplify their power.  We should also expect them to experiment with anticipating our needs, as <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/112c87e6?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank"><u>OpenAI is now trying with its experimental Pulse feature</u></a>.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">When chatbots were new, a simple leaderboard could consistently signal which company made the best model available. But to understand who’s really at the frontier today will require looking beyond it.</p><div class="kg-card kg-image-card" style="margin: 0 0 1.5em; padding: 0;"><img src="https://www.platformer.news/content/images/2024/05/floating_linebreak_600px-1.png" class="kg-image" alt loading="lazy" width="600" height="157" style="border: none; -ms-interpolation-mode: bicubic; max-width: 100%; display: block; margin: 0 auto; height: auto; width: auto;"></div><div class="kg-card kg-image-card" style="margin: 0 0 1.5em; padding: 0;"><img src="https://www.platformer.news/content/images/size/w1600/image/fetch/f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https-3a-2f-2fbucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com-2fpublic-2fimages-2fc2a8d7e3-b0bc-4fd2-a8e7-dd07c8877df0_2912x728.jpg" class="kg-image" alt loading="lazy" width="600" height="150" style="border: none; -ms-interpolation-mode: bicubic; max-width: 100%; display: block; margin: 0 auto; height: auto; width: auto;"></div><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">On the podcast this week: </strong>Kevin and I report back from OpenAI Developer Day.
