"I think this is just how new tech revolutions go. People will over-invest in some places. Depending on how the bubble bursts, that could mean significant trouble for the 75 public companies that JPMorgan analysts found to be closely tied to AI. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">On the other hand: analysts said that most of these companies have so much cash on hand that they're not worried about broader risks. "From a fundamental perspective, these fears are not justified," they wrote.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">OpenAI alone has signed $1 trillion in deals this year to buy computing power for its services.</strong> On Monday, as part of this crusade OpenAI made a deal to acquire up to 10 percent of AMD — joining related deals that it has made with Nvidia, Oracle and CoreWeave. If every deal comes through, OpenAI will have access to 20 gigawatts of computing capacity, <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/24453bc4?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">the <em>Financial Times</em> reports</a> — roughly the output of 20 nuclear reactors.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">But some of these deals <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/2da70a7a?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">are circular in nature</a> — Nvidia giving OpenAI to purchase systems from Nvidia — raising eyebrows among some analysts. (Just as I was finishing today's newsletter, Bloomberg reported that Nvidia just signed <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/3f6b49da?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">a similar such deal with xAI</a>.) Certain details related to how OpenAI intends to finance these deals are scarce. In the AMD case, OpenAI may recoup the money on its investment simply by selling the AMD stock, which added $78 billion in value after OpenAI announced the deal. "We wouldn’t be in these deals if we didn’t have that conviction that the revenue opportunity is there at this kind of scale," he said. "We can still monetize every GPU we get our hands on super well, and that will keep going for a long time." Greg Brockman, the company's president, added: "One thing that’s hard to see from the outside is the amount of things we have not shipped due to lack of computing power."</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">We have entered the "weird financial tricks" phase of the bubble. </strong>A reliable indicator of bubbles is that companies concoct bizarre financial instruments and accounting measures to paper over their problems. In <em>Fortune</em>, Allie Garfinkel reports that venture capitalists are irked at <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/a402b4c9?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">some of the creative accounting</a> going on in their portfolios. Some startups are reporting one-time sales as "recurring revenue." Others technically show "recurring revenue" for what are essentially trials. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">And that's on the tame side. For crazy, you can look to Robinhood's suggestion that <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/88641c57?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">it might offer "tokenized" equity</a> in OpenAI. By "tokenized," <em>Business Insider </em>reports, Robinhood means "blockchain-enabled representations of securities like stocks." In reality, they have no connection to OpenAI equity whatsoever. But that doesn't mean that consumers shouldn't be able to gamble on the mirage! </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Even Altman is suggesting he may require as-yet uninvented instruments to achieve his ambitions. "Like in other financial markets, I expect that as things mature, the right paradigm will emerge," he told reporters yesterday in response to questions on how OpenAI would fund its Stargate data center project. "Maybe new financial instruments will emerge, maybe a standard way of doing these kinds of deals will emerge. ... Want to show that AI is taking over society? OpenAI said yesterday that ChatGPT has 800 million users a week. Want to suggest the reverse? Here's new research from Yale University and the Brookings Institution stating that <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/842d3600?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">AI is failing to change workplaces faster than previous technologies</a>, including the internet. Jobs are not being lost to AI in massive numbers — nor has AI turbocharged GDP by massively augmenting the majority of workers.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">It's clear that there's real value in AI. So far, though, reality has not caught up with the tech industry's most optimistic visions. Given that this is the most expensive buildout in the history of the industry, that naturally raises concern.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">All of the above is still roughly consistent with the story that the optimists tell, which goes like this: we are currently witnessing a winner-take-all, or winner-take-most, race to build artificial general intelligence. The companies that don't finish first, second, or third in that race may indeed lose tens of billions of dollars. But the winners will create trillions of dollar in value and ensure continued economic growth.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">That story hand-waves its way past countless questions. But it's a narrative that has Silicon Valley firmly in its grip. It's easily the biggest dream that the tech industry has ever had.
