"Finally, pure slop," read <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/2777a753?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">the most-liked reply</a>.) "ah yes, infinite slop. Just what we needed," reads a highly upvoted response to the company's <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/80d32359?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">livestream on YouTube</a>.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">It's a betrayal of the mission</strong>. Many commentators have observed that OpenAI's mission is to build artificial general intelligence that benefits all of humanity, and that AI-generated slop feeds seem to be ... something else. "Sam Altman 2 weeks ago: 'we need 7 trillion dollars and 10GW to cure cancer,'" read <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/599bf748?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">one X post</a> that Altman ultimately responded to today. "Sam Altman today: 'We are launching AI slop videos marketed as personalized ads.'” Others <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/fd55a682?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">made memes to the same effect</a>; here's <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/b1178837?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">another viral dunk on the subject</a>.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">It's a potential revenue source</strong>. In his response to the above, Altman acknowledged a financial motive in building a social app. "We do mostly need the capital for build AI that can do science, and for sure we are focused on AGI with almost all of our research effort," Altman <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/ec3e7039?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">wrote on X</a>. "It is also nice to show people cool new tech/products along the way, make them smile, and hopefully make some money given all that compute need." He added: "Reality is nuanced when it comes to optimal trajectories for a company."</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">It's very Sam Altman-forward</strong>. Just as Elon Musk made himself the protagonist of X, so has Altman put himself front and center in Sora. Somewhat incredibly, Altman is allowing anyone to remix his likeness into any video they can imagine. As a result, he's everywhere. <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/2bc13cce?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">At <em>TechCrunch</em></a>, Amanda Silberling notes just how much fun people seem to be having putting Altman videos that make use of other people's intellectual property, or mocking the idea of copyright altogether. The <em>Wall Street Journal</em> reported this week that <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/7919e200?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">copyright holders have to opt <em>out</em> of Sora</a> if they don't want to see (for example) Mario smoking weed. When <em>404</em> looked this week, they found that a great number of copyright holders don't seem to have gotten around to that just yet. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">"Video after video shows Pikachu and South Park’s Cartman doing ASMR; a pixel-perfect scene from the Simpsons that doesn’t actually exist; a fake version of Star Wars, Jurassic Park, or La La Land; Rick and Morty in Minecraft; Rick and Morty in Breath of the Wild; Rick and Morty talking about Sora; Toad from the Mario universe deadlifting; Michael Jackson dancing in a room that seems vaguely Russian; Charizard signing the Declaration of Independence, and Mario and Goku shaking hands," <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/c8a7947a?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">Jason Koebler writes</a>. It seems strange that Meta, the defining company in social networking, released Vibes — which has essentially no social dimension whatsoever. Has the company's rejection of a feed focused on friends and family created an opening for an upstart?</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">It makes mistakes</strong>. If you wondered if someone might make a video showing Sora making a mistake in math, and whether Gary Marcus would seize the moment to post "phd level-work, for sure!" ... well, someone did make that video. And Gary Marcus <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/0142aa41?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">did Gary Marcus</a>. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">It makes OpenAI employees nervous.</strong> One of the more surprising reactions to the launch came from OpenAI's own employees, several of whom arched an eyebrow about the company's latest product. "AI-based feeds are scary," <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/1028817d?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">posted John Hallman</a>, who works on pretraining at the company. "I won't deny that I felt some concern when I first learned we were releasing Sora 2. That said, I think the team did the absolute best job they possible could in designing a positive experience."
