It seems obvious that the final form of large language models will not be a box that you type in whenever you need something. At the same time, how often do you want that same LLM to tap you on the shoulder and try to anticipate your needs?

Here’s how the company described Pulse in a blog post:

Pulse is a new experience where ChatGPT proactively does research to deliver personalized updates based on your chats, feedback, and connected apps like your calendar. You can curate what ChatGPT researches by letting it know what’s useful and what isn’t. The research appears in Pulse as topical visual cards you can scan quickly or open for more detail, so each day starts with a new, focused set of updates.

This is the first step toward a more useful ChatGPT that proactively brings you what you need, helping you make more progress so you can get back to your life. We’ll learn and improve from early use before rolling it out to Plus, with the goal of making it available to everyone.

On Wednesday, I attended a briefing with members of the OpenAI product team, and on Thursday I received my first briefing in the ChatGPT app. While the product is still at its earliest stages, I think it represents a notable step toward what ChatGPT and other assistants are working to become: personalized tools that work for you continuously in the background.

“What we built Pulse to do is think proactively, [...] do work asynchronously for you, and then curate that into a set of insights and updates for you each day,” Adam Fry, the product lead for proactive experiences in ChatGPT, told me in an interview.

Over the next half hour, Fry and the team showed off many examples of what ChatGPT put together for their Pulse feeds: researching Halloween costumes; suggesting sightseeing opportunities for an upcoming trip to Arizona; recommending pescatarian dishes that are available at a restaurant for an upcoming dinner; and delivering a personalized news briefing based on their personal interests.

Unlike similar feeds in social apps, you can modify the contents of Pulse just by texting it to ChatGPT within the app. The team encouraged me to try longer, multi-step prompts. Samir Ahmed, a technical lead at ChatGPT, told me he set up Pulse to bring him news about Formula 1 without spoiling the previous day’s races.

Some of these suggestions are made possible by an optional feature that links Pulse to your Gmail and Google Calendar. Giving ChatGPT more context about your life and work — at the cost of some of your privacy — enables more personalized suggestions.

The Pulse team told me that the feature improves over time as it learns your preferences. For me, on day one, Pulse looked mostly like a news feed — it offered stories based on my recent ChatGPT research, such as one about a Microsoft executive talking about bringing AI to the company’s web browser. Like elsewhere in ChatGPT, Pulse summarizes news stories into bullet points with small links to sources. (The news sources in Pulse are not limited to publishers OpenAI has struck deals with, Fry said. By default, it searches the entire web, although publishers can opt out if they choose.)

Half a day later, I opened Pulse again to find that it had transformed. One item suggested a new feature for Platformer based on some conversations I’ve had in ChatGPT recently. Another offered, seemingly out of nowhere, “clues before platforms and products collapse” — a set of reporting tips and suggested follow-up steps. It also offered a series of recent news stories based on my interests, including new items about OpenAI, Stargate, and CoreWeave.

At the same time, I found that Pulse misfired on items related to time and travel. One offered me some suggested questions to ask Sam Altman at Hard Fork Live, which took place three months ago. Another alerted me to a strike at Italian airports on Friday, “since you’re traveling in Italy now”; in reality I got back from Italy more than two weeks ago. I imagine these hiccups will get ironed out over time; for the moment, though, people should manage their expectations.

The notable thing about Pulse is not so much the briefing it will give you today as what it tells us about how ChatGPT and the wider AI landscape are evolving. Today, the vast majority of consumers’ AI usage involves typing in a box. The problem with that, Fry told me, is that you’re often left guessing what the chatbot can do. (This is one reason Siri and Alexa never managed to do more than a handful of tasks for people. How was anyone supposed to remember what they could do successfully and what they couldn’t?)

Pulse marks the first time a big chatbot maker has told its user base: tell us what you work on, what you want to keep track of, and what’s on your calendar and in your inbox. In exchange, we’ll start doing a little work on your behalf — seeing where we could be useful, or at least interesting.

For now, little of this stuff feels like anything you might entrust a human executive assistant with. But you can imagine a future version of Pulse that is drafting replies to your emails, making reservations, and buying a gift for your spouse on your anniversary.

That’s the version of Pulse that I hope to use. But I can also imagine a version of the feature that takes cues from social apps and optimizes not for usefulness but for engagement.

This week in The Atlantic, Lila Shroff wrote about “chatbait” — the cues at the end of seemingly every chatbot response designed to get you talking. “After clicking through the profiles of 20 AI bots on Instagram, all of them DM’ed me first,” she writes. “‘Hey bestie! what’s up?? 🥰,’ wrote one. ‘Hey, babe. Miss me?’ asked another. Days later, my phone pinged: ‘bestie 💗’ wanted to chat.”

ChatGPT has its own version of this already, of course. “As OpenAI has grown up, its chatbot seems to have transformed into an over-caffeinated project manager, responding to messages with oddly specific questions and unsolicited proposals,” Shroff writes, citing various occasions on which she asked an open-and-shut factual question and got chatbait in response. “Occasionally, this tendency is genuinely helpful, such as when I’m asking ChatGPT for dinner ideas and it proactively offers to draft a grocery list. But often, it feels like a gimmick to trap users in conversation.”

OpenAI says it wants ChatGPT to be helpful rather than addictive, and that’s the way I experience it today. But a feature like Pulse, which looks and feels like a social feed, could create other incentives. (Particularly given that the company is reportedly now also looking for an ads chief, as Alex Heath reported in his new newsletter Sources this week.)

Notably, many OpenAI executives and product leaders came from Meta, including new CEO of applications Fidji Simo. Over time, Facebook’s growth imperatives led it to greatly expand the reasons why it would send you a push notification, until eventually they had no real connection to the user at all. (Today Facebook notified me that someone had listed a 1987 Dodge Ram on Marketplace, a feature that I have never once used.)

That relentless investment in engagement hacks has been great for Meta’s business but terrible for its reputation and its sense of purpose. An app that once focused on connecting you to friends and family is now devoted to showing you whatever you can be enticed to look at. (Say hello to the new slop feed in the Meta AI app.)

The promise of a proactive AI assistant is that it lightens your burden, automating away some of life’s drudgery to give you more time to focus on the things you care about. The danger is that, in an effort to get people to open your app all the time, you abandon the reason you started building your app in the first place.

For now, Pulse is a compelling experiment in the former. But as OpenAI takes on more DNA from Meta, the pressure to become the latter may prove hard to resist.

On the podcast this week: Kevin and I sort through OpenAI's megadeal with Nvidia.
