Narayanan and Kapoor argue that AI will be enormously consequential — they liken its potential impact to that of electricity and of the internet. But the resulting transformation of society that it enables will likely take decades, they write, because individuals, corporations and institutions take a long time to adapt to change.

By coincidence, the paper came out less than two weeks after AI 2027, another much-debated paper on the subject of AI timelines. In it, authors Daniel Kokotajlo, Scott Alexander, Thomas Larsen, Eli Lifland, and Romeo Dean lay out their case that AI diffusion will happen extremely quickly, with superhuman intelligence arriving in models by the end of the titular year. The paper, which is written as a kind of evidence-based speculative fiction, posits two potential scenarios for the outcome of this arrival — one of which results in a robot takeover of the world, and human extinction by 2030.

The articulation of such distinctive worldviews in close proximity to one another offered a useful litmus test to employees of AI labs, policy makers, regulators, and other interested observers. Are you an AI 2027 — or perhaps, 2028 or 2029 — person, or do you believe AI is more "normal"?

In the ensuing debate, Narayanan and Kapoor came to believe that their paper had been misinterpreted. Some began calling AI a "normal technology" as a way of minimizing its impact, and categorized the authors as AI skeptics. Others saw the relatively incremental improvements of GPT-5 as evidence that AI 2027 was wrong, and that the normal technology authors were right.

On Monday, Narayanan and Kapoor published a new blog post intended to set the record straight. (And to announce that they had renamed their blog AI as Normal Technology, in advance of the release of a book of the same name that they are now writing.)

The whole post is worth reading, and I particularly appreciate the way that the authors work to find common ground with people who believe AI will diffuse across society more rapidly. They write:

One thing on which we definitely agree with AI boosters is that AI is not going away, nor will it become a niche like crypto that most people can ignore. Now that the collective initial shock of generative AI has worn off, there’s a need for structured ways to think about how AI’s impacts might unfold, instead of (over)reacting to each new technical capability or emergent social effect.

That said, I find myself agreeing more with those who believe that the use of AI tools is rapidly increasing, at least in some sectors. Narayanan and Kapoor say they have an in-depth analysis of the issue forthcoming. In the meantime, they argue that it only seems like AI is spreading rapidly, because chatbots are free and new models can be deployed instantly around the world. That doesn't mean people are using them, though; the authors cite OpenAI CEO Sam Altman saying that less than 1 percent of free ChatGPT users were using thinking models before GPT-5.

On the other hand, though ... I actually think people are using AI? Microsoft said a year ago that 75 percent of global knowledge workers are using AI. A McKinsey study found that 71 percent of organizations now regularly use AI in at least one business function. A Stack Overflow survey this year found that 78.5 percent of developers are using AI at least sometimes; 47.1 percent use it daily. And ChatGPT now has around 700 million weekly users.

Now, whether this growth can truly be said to be unprecedented is not really of interest to me. What interests me is that some sectors of society are making active use of AI on a daily basis, for better and for worse, and that the number of people who use AI daily seems to be growing.

Narayanan and Kapoor argue that this is essentially a cognitive error on my part, and one they are sympathetic to: "Whatever change we’re living through at the moment will feel like a much bigger shift than something we successfully adapted to in the past."

They continue: "But it feels dramatically faster because as soon as one hears about a particular AI use case, one has to decide whether to adopt it or not, even if it is ultimately the case that the vast majority of the time, people are deciding not to, for various reasons that might be rational or irrational."

II.

Here's a fun thought experiment: imagine walking into the faculty lounge of a large American high school. After getting teachers' attention, you tell them that each time students hear about a particular AI use case, they have to decide whether to adopt it or not — but that the vast majority of the time, students will decide not to.

Would the faculty believe you?

Certainly, individual students resist using AI to do all their work. Ashanty Rosario is one of them. "I am a senior at a public high school in New York, and these tools are everywhere," she wrote last week in The Atlantic. "I do not want to use them in the way I see other kids my age using them — I generally choose not to — but they are inescapable."

Rosario goes on to document various ways that her classmates use AI to do just about everything for them: using AI to generate chapter summaries and submitting them to be graded; feeding photos of Algebra II homework into ChatGPT to get the solutions; passing AI-written essays through "humanizer" tools to make them sound more plausibly like something a high school student might have written.

Rosario writes that AI has diffused so quickly through her high school that she worries for her generation: "Many of us are so accustomed to outsourcing that we’re dulling the very instincts that we need to prevail in life: grit, critical thinking, and the ability to function smoothly under stress."

Hers is only the story of one school, of course. But it's consistent with the stories we heard on the most recent episode of Hard Fork, where we spoke with students, a professor at Princeton, and the founder of an alternative K-12 school about what AI is doing to classrooms. The professor, D. Graham Burnett, spoke with us about the (excellent) essay he published in April in the New Yorker on the subject; it was titled "Will the Humanities Survive Artificial Intelligence?" (Not in its current form, was the answer.)

To all of these people, AI in the classroom is already an accepted fact of life, long before artificial general intelligence has arrived. And it happened with astonishing speed, because it turned out that even the original version of ChatGPT could do many school assignments as well or better than the average student. That hasn't been true so far with most knowledge worker jobs. But what happens when it does become true? Will the fallout truly unfold over a smooth curve that takes decades to arrive?

Here I suspect Narayanan and Kapoor might accuse me of technological determinism: the idea that because as soon as the technology exists, rapid change must inevitably follow. In their original paper, they remind us that AI diffusion is already governed by various institutions. If AI is spreading quickly in schools, that may be less a consequence of the technology itself than the fact that we have collectively decided to let it.

I don't know! My sense in talking with students and teachers is that plenty of adults in various positions of authority have tried to stop the diffusion of AI in classrooms, and they have more or less totally failed. And they have sometimes done so with negative consequences: AI detection software frequently results in false positives and wrongfully accused students.

Narayanan and Kapoor's work is important because it offers an intellectual framework for those who believe that AI transformation will unfold more slowly than its most fervent supporters are counting on. And when the scenarios predicted by AI 2027 fail to emerge in that year, or the year after, AI as Normal Technology may help explain why.

At the same time, looking just at what AI is doing to education, I wonder if Narayanan and Kapoor are underestimating the rate of change. Whatever is happening in classrooms this year, it hardly seems normal.

Talk about this edition with us in Discord: This link will get you in for the next week.

Apple Event

Surely one of the duller iPhone presentations in recent memory.
