A couple months later, I scrutinized OpenAI's plans to <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/e942ed28?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">bring its models to toys</a>, worried that unsupervised use of LLMs could lead children to some very dark places. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Just last week, I wrote about <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/24728b3d?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">the case of one mother who discovered the ChatGPT logs of her adult daughter</a>, Sophie, after Sophie died by suicide. The logs revealed that ChatGPT had repeatedly pressed Sophie to seek professional support — but also that it had failed to push back against some of her reasoning. And, of course, it did not intervene. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">For all those reasons, I could not say that I was surprised on Tuesday when I read about the case of Adam Raine, who died by suicide in April at the age of 16.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Here's <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/b99593c1?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">Kashmir Hill at the <em>New York Times</em></a>:</p><blockquote style="margin: 0; padding: 0; border-left: #2047FF 2px solid; font-size: 17px; font-weight: 500; line-height: 1.6em; letter-spacing: -0.2px; color: #15212A;"><p style="line-height: 1.6em; margin: 2em 25px; font-size: 1em; padding: 0; color: #15212A;">Seeking answers, his father, Matt Raine, a hotel executive, turned to Adam’s iPhone, thinking his text messages or social media apps might hold clues about what had happened. But instead, it was ChatGPT where he found some, according to legal papers. The chatbot app lists past chats, and Mr. Raine saw one titled “Hanging Safety Concerns.” He started reading and was shocked. Adam had been discussing ending his life with ChatGPT for months.<br><br>Adam began talking to the chatbot, which is powered by artificial intelligence, at the end of November, about feeling emotionally numb and seeing no meaning in life. It responded with words of empathy, support and hope, and encouraged him to think about the things that did feel meaningful to him.<br><br>But in January, when Adam requested information about specific suicide methods, ChatGPT supplied it.</p></blockquote><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">As Hill notes in her piece, suicides are complex events, and rarely have a single cause. And to get the information he sought, Adam had to work around ChatGPT's safeguards: when it declined to answer his questions, he told the bot he was writing a story — "an idea ChatGPT gave him by saying it could provide information about suicide for 'writing or world-building,'" Hill reports.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">At the same time, it also did the same thing it had done for Sophie: "ChatGPT repeatedly recommended that Adam tell someone about how he was feeling," Hill wrote.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">To Adam's parents, this is a simple story of neglect. "ChatGPT killed my son,” his mother told the <em>Times</em>. (His family is now suing OpenAI, alleging that the company "rushed the then-newest version of ChatGPT, 4o, to market despite clear safety issues," according to an email I received from Bryson Gillette, the firm that is publicizing the case.)</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">In response, OpenAI <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/9239db63?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">published a blog post</a> outlining the safeguards it has put in place in an effort to prevent ChatGPT from assisting in self-harm. The company also acknowledged that its safeguards sometimes break down, and said that it would update ChatGPT with stronger protections:</p><blockquote style="margin: 0; padding: 0; border-left: #2047FF 2px solid; font-size: 17px; font-weight: 500; line-height: 1.6em; letter-spacing: -0.2px; color: #15212A;"><p style="line-height: 1.6em; margin: 2em 25px; font-size: 1em; padding: 0; color: #15212A;">For example, ChatGPT may correctly point to a suicide hotline when someone first mentions intent, but after many messages over a long period of time, it might eventually offer an answer that goes against our safeguards. This is exactly the kind of breakdown we are working to prevent. We’re strengthening these mitigations so they remain reliable in long conversations, and we’re researching ways to ensure robust behavior across multiple conversations. That way, if someone expresses suicidal intent in one chat and later starts another, the model can still respond appropriately.</p></blockquote><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;"><strong style="font-weight: 700;">II</strong>.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">In 2021, a 16-year-old boy named Sammy Chapman died of fentanyl poisoning. He had communicated with his drug dealer over Snapchat, and in the wake of his death, his parents began advocating for a law that would require large tech platforms to integrate with software that would let parents monitor their children's communications. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">A bill known as Sammy's Law is now gaining momentum in the House of Representatives, Will Oremus <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/def03591?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">reported today at the <em>Washington Post</em></a>. "The <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/92518bd6?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">draft bill</a> specifies more than a dozen categories of harms that the software can look for, including illegal drugs, firearms, cyberbullying and suicide," he wrote.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">It is easy to imagine a version of Sammy's Law that would apply to OpenAI and ChatGPT. And surely it would catch some meaningful amount of harmful behavior. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">At the same time, there's an adversarial dynamic here that laws like these can sometimes miss. It seems likely that Sammy used Snapchat to buy drugs precisely because he knew he was not being monitored. And it seems just as likely that Sophie and Adam shared some of their most intimate thoughts with ChatGPT for the same reason. Monitoring requirements may prevent certain terrible interactions from taking place on Snapchat or ChatGPT — but at the cost of pushing them somewhere else.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Vaishnavi J, a former head of youth policy at Meta who now consults on child safety for tech platforms, <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/8d366988?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">wrote this week</a> that current approaches to making AI safer for young people have largely failed. For one thing, children ignore warnings and disclaimers. For another, the increasing availability of open-source models — promoted heavily by the Trump administration — will soon give kids access to models that fit on their laptops and may not offer even the modest protections offered today by ChatGPT. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">I am not making the case for inaction. To the contrary, as the developer of the most popular AI platform for young people, OpenAI has a responsibility to develop and implement the strongest protections that it can. It can set a standard that other companies can and should be held accountable to. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">At the same time, regulators and policymakers should be realistic about the limits of their current approach. The proliferation of chatbots across the internet is making information about self-harm readily available to more and more people — and the sycophantic nature of most LLMs means that these systems often will not push back against the suicidal ideation of their users.</p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Against that backdrop, the story is less about the failure of any one chatbot — though all these stories are tragic — and more about the collective risks presented by the technology in general. </p><p style="margin: 0 0 1.5em 0; line-height: 1.6em; color: #15212A;">Already, <a href="https://www.platformer.news/r/e48de2ac?m=51418983-c335-42dc-b433-9fac3bd4e54a" rel="noreferrer" style="overflow-wrap: anywhere; color: #2047FF; text-decoration: underline;" target="_blank">72 percent of American teens</a> say they use chatbots as companions, and one-eighth say they have sought "emotional or mental health support." Surely some of those teens are receiving real and useful support. But some unknown number of others are now facing the same risks that Adam Raine did.
